Staff and volunteers praised for their work
Royal Gazette
Wednesday, June 11, 2014

The volunteers, staff and organisations that helped to make Bermuda’s celebration of World Oceans Day a success are being praised for their “amazing work”.

Bermuda Zoological Society and Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo has said thank you to all those who took part in the World Oceans Day Open House last Saturday.

More than 1,100 people attended the free festivities at the aquarium, enjoying animal encounters, children’s crafts and a breath-holding demonstration and contest.

Dr Ian Walker, principal curator at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, said: “The celebration of World Oceans Day is very important to us at BAMZ and BZS, as it is our hope to instil a love for our oceans in the youth of Bermuda, so that they will go on to lead the way in conserving and protecting our marine environment.

“The day proved to be very successful, with many coming to take advantage of all the wonderful activities available, but we are most thankful to our many partners that came to share their amazing work with the public.”

Among the organisations that supported the event were Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Blue Halo, the Ocean Support Foundation, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Plastic Tides, the Marine Debris Task Force, the marine resources section of the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Conservation Services.
