World Oceans Day will be marked on Saturday with a free open house at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

The BAMZ will join with hundreds of similar institutions around the world to celebrate the seas.

A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS), one of two charities which support the BAMZ, said: “Our desire is to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in Bermuda’s existence and the increasingly critical need for each of us to help conserve its wonders and resources.”

Doors at BAMZ open at 10am and the day will feature a range of activities, including ocean-themed crafts for youngsters and feeding time for the animals.

The event will also feature the “Get Salty!” breath-holding competition, while BAMZ junior volunteers will chip in with snack concessions, which will also help raise cash for a field trip to Costa Rica.

The spokeswoman added that a wide variety of educational displays from conservation societies, including the Sargasso Sea Alliance, the Ocean Support Foundation, Greenrock, Blue Halo, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Government departments.

The spokeswoman added: “Guests will be able to learn more about these important organisations and services first hand from people who work in the field.”

The event is timed to coincide with World Oceans Day on Sunday, June 8.
