Students Enjoying Environmental Education
Bernews
Wednesday, September 10, 2014

While Bermuda may be an island surrounded by some of the most exquisite coral reefs in the world, not all of Bermuda’s students have had the opportunity to go out and explore our prized marine habitats.

However, over the last three years, the Bermuda Zoological Society, with assistance from RUBiS Energy Bermuda, has been able to provide hundreds of local students with the opportunity to explore our reefs.

Support from RUBiS has been geared specifically at supplying Diesel fuel for both the bus, which provides free transportation for all students to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo for free conservation and environmental classes, and BZS’s floating classroom, The Endurance.

Aboard The Endurance, students have had the opportunity to explore Bermuda’s marine environments, both inshore and out on the open ocean, through a variety of programmes, including Kids On The Reef and Aqua Camp.

Sales and Marketing Representative, joined Aqua Camp students and their teacher, Camilla
Stranger, for a snorkel trip to explore sea grass beds in Bailey’s Bay.

RUBiS’ generosity has also allowed the expansion of a variety of research and conservation efforts, including our citizen scientist programme, Reef Watch, which helps monitor Bermuda’s reefs, and the Bermuda Turtle Project.

“RUBiS has been a huge supporter of the Bermuda Zoological Society over the last several years in a very unique way,” explained BZS President, Richard Winchell. “Their gift has allowed thousands of Bermuda’s school children the opportunity to access free environmental and conservation classes at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, through their support of our bus, as well as helping us open the eyes of our young people with face-to-face encounters on and in the water aboard our floating classroom, the Endurance, especially through programmes like KIDS ON THE REEF. Their generosity has also assisted in a variety of local conservation and research projects, including Reef Watch and the Bermuda Turtle Project. We are grateful for their continued support and value this partnership with Rubis.”

Thanks to the support of RUBiS Energy Bermuda, 1000s of students have had the opportunity
to explore Bermuda’s marine environment, both on and in the water, through the
unique educational Bermuda Zoological Society.

Mr. David Rose, Managing Director of RUBiS Energy Bermuda, announced, “RUBiS is very proud to be in a position to assist Bermuda Zoological Society through the donation of fuel for the vessel Endurance over the past 3 years.

“The donation has provided many school children with the opportunity to learn about our precious marine environment whether in conjunction with their science curriculum or as part of an expedition during summer camps. We have been a supporter of youth programs in Bermuda for many years and this particular donation fits in very well with our continued support in this area.”
