Ocean Education

Our Floating Classroom: Endurance, as well as the Beaches and Cottage on Trunk Island serves as the educational hub for the Ocean Ed but make no mistake: the true learning is happening out in the ocean! Students will be submerged in ocean science. The BZS Ocean Ed classes aim to connect students with their local blue backyard. Not only will students learn about the ocean, but they also will grow their connection to the ocean. The Ocean Ed programme has expanded from the Kids on the Reef Programme, so that students can discover their love for the ocean even earlier!

Ocean Ed classes gets the students learning in their local ocean water. While these classes align with Cambridge and other international standards, they have an additional benefit of building the appreciation and love for nature to create the next generation of environmental stewards. This classes are an excellent opportunity to get students engaged, especially those that may struggle with the traditional classroom environment.

Some classes have pre-lessons and post-lessons to be completed by the teacher before and after the field trip. Allow enough time before registering to receive the materials and complete with your class. BPSS can use our Sign Up Genius Registration that we circulate among teachers at the various grade levels during the term of their class. Given the outdoor component of the class, all classes are weather dependent.

The classes below are suggested grade offerings. We can scaffold classes for a younger age group or add in more complexity for an older age group. Contact us to discuss.

Lower Primary

Kids on the Beach: Human Impacts on Island Environments

BPSS Grade Level and Term: P2 - Term 3

Cambridge Standards:

  • 2Esp.03 Know that human activity can affect the environment
  • 2Be.01 Know that an environment in which a plant of animal naturally lives is its habitat
  • 2Be.02 Know that different habitats contain different plants and animals.
  • 2Be.03 Identify similarities and differences between local environments
  • 2Bs.01 Compare how animals, including humans, are similar and different in their external body parts and skin covering
  •

Summary:

This lesson is the precursor to our Kids on the Reef programme. Similar to Kids on the Reef, students will not only learn about their blue ocean backyard, but also learn more about themselves as they begin their own journey of interacting and engaging with the ocean. Students will learn breathing exercises and practice putting their face in water. They will be introduced to snorkels and masks. They will also explore shallow water environments using view finders and exploring our beach on Trunk Island. This is part of our progression of ocean experiences:

Preschool: Face in the Water

P2 Kids on the Beach: Holding Breath and Masks/Snorkel Introductions

P5 Snorkel (part of Predator Prey Class): Masks and Snorkels

M2 Kids on the Reef

Predator Prey in Coral Reefs

BPSS Grade Level and Term: P5 - Term 2

Cambridge Standards:

  • 5Be.03 Describe the common adaptations of predator and prey animals.
  • 5Be.01 Describe how plants and animals are adapted to environments that are hot, cold, wet, and dry and other environments

Summary:

This class has a 2-sessions format:

  • First session : a 90-min class ran at BAMZ where the students will explore relationships between structure and function for various marine organisms when it comes to feeding on the reef and being adapted to their habitat. Students will become aquarists and are tasked to appropriately feed the tanks based on the organisms feeding needs and their adaptations. The aquarium hall will serve as our exploration grounds to familiarize with fish adaptations before feeding the fish behind the scenes (March 2024
  • Second session : a 2 hours session including an immersion with a snorkel to observe some of these adaptations in the marine habitat directly, and how they translate to feeding behaviors (June 2024, target week of June 10th-16th TBD).

Kids on the Reef

Grade M2

Fall: September through November

Spring: April- June

The Kids on the Reef programme is an active two-day classroom and immersion programme teaching the skills and knowledge for youth to become safe free divers and advocates for global ocean issues facing Bermuda. It runs in the fall and spring. The programme includes both confined water and open-water free diving instruction from land and from the boat (depending on weather) along with teaching coral reef ecology, ocean conservation, and personal development through setting goals and coaching mental and body awareness. Students are gifted a mask and a snorkel to keep.

We have introduced hundreds of Bermudian young people to the ocean in their backyard and strive to cater to all the M2 students across the island.

This programme is also possible thanks to the involvement of older chaperones to provide the appropriate supervision in the water.
